Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Memorial Day 2011

My deepest sense of gratitude and thanks to our service men and women, and their families. Though today we honor are fallen, I would like to offer a prayer to the forum members serving or those with children on active duty.

God, may they return safely to home, in body and spirit. Amen

May God bless those who selflessly serve, and forgive those who selfishly send others into such.

What is it about turning the other cheek that we 'Christians' don't understand?

If Jesus was right then WAR IS WRONG!

Dissent is the highest form of patriotism!

Howard Zinn (August 24, 1922 – January 27, 2010) was an American historian, academic, author, playwright, and social activist. He specialized in writing about the labor history of the United States in the 20th century. Howard Zinn is best known for his award-winning book, "A People's History of the United States."

Eager to fight fascism, Zinn joined the Army Air Force during World War II. He was assigned as a bombardier in the 490th Bombardment Group, bombing targets in Berlin, Czechoslovakia, and Hungary. The anti-war stance Zinn developed later was informed, in part, by his experiences.

In his tenure as a political science professor at Boston University from 1964-88 he wrote more than 20 books. He wrote extensively about the Civil Rights, civil liberties and anti-war movements. His memoir, You Can't Be Neutral on a Moving Train, was also the title of a 2004 documentary about Zinn's life and work.

Howard Zinn quotes:

Dissent is the highest form of patriotism.

Most wars, after all, present themselves as humanitarian endeavors to help people.

One certain effect of war is to diminish freedom of expression.

War itself is the enemy of the human race.

There is no flag large enough to cover the shame of killing innocent people.

Americans have been taught that their nation is civilized and humane. But, too often, U.S. actions have been uncivilized and inhumane.

We need to decide that we will not go to war, whatever reason is conjured up by the politicians or the media, because war in our time is always indiscriminate, a war against innocents, a war against children.

When people don't understand that the government doesn't have their interests in mind, they're more susceptible to go to war.

If the gods had intended for people to vote, they would have given us candidates.

Grateful Dead played a thwarting and raw Dancing in The Streets opener for their classic anti-war protest benefit show at M.I.T. in 1970. Obviously, GD played that on purpose like that. They were taking an anti-war stance by playing their counter-culture music with, and for, "the people". Can't we make this connection? We suffer horribly from the dastardly deeds being committed by our mainstream US News Media. They are dysfunctional, and they're committing crimes against humanity by churning out their constant lies and propaganda - for the sakes of their cronies, their high salaries, their stock prices, and their shareholders.

Jerry served. Owsley served. Both of my brothers served. I almost got drafted and sent to Vietnam. Many of my friends served in Vietnam. Read what I wrote about Rochdale College in Toronto, Canada, and the Vietnam connection. The mystery of the Festival Express - what about Rochdale College?

Dead heads have argued here, "Jer never said anti-war 'this', or he didn't say 'that' about peace, or GD never did 'these' types of things to help save our planet. I've shown you some of the things that 'they did do' - by posting about things that weren't being mentioned much here: stuff about GD's sound system, taping in the Audience, taping in the Studio, GD's movement and the counter-culture era.

Good jobs for people > steady income > stable food prices > good education > access to health care > quality environment > peace: That's what Jer, Bob, and Phil were literally intimating as they were being filmed in The Hippie Temptation news package for CBS and Harry Reasoner. It's summed up when Jer is saying, "We would all like to be able to live an uncluttered life, a simple life, a good life and think about moving the whole human race ahead a step." Phil cements it for eternity when he frames Jer's concepts by saying, "In essence, the scene has grown up with us, and we have grown up with the scene. We've all grown up together." That was in 1967.

Some Dead heads might consider trying to be more honest and open with themselves. On the other hand, why not consider throwing the baby (GD tapes) out with the bath water (GD counter-culture)? Many people continue to deny the GD were doing what I've shown them to be doing on the counter-cultural side. Should these people understand this better? Should they consider denying themselves listening to GD's music and tapes? Should they try something else? There is a clear counter-culture connection that I've made here with the scene. It historically links tapers with the GD, their lyrics, their music, their benefit shows, and their venues.

Obama needs to stop advancing the Reagan-Bush-Clinton-Dubya Ponzi-scheme agenda for Goldman Sachs, Big Banks, and Wall Street. Instead of bailing out Wall Street and bankers, Obama needs to bail out our Justice System and our Military Code of Conduct. He is refusing to uphold the rules of Treaties, Laws, and Orders.

President Obama is The Commander-in-Chief of the USA combined Armed Forces. Obama will win the Nov, 2012 election. His FIRST ACT, after he's sworn in as President on Jan 20, 2013, must be to bring criminal charges against Bush & Cheney for war crimes. When Obama fails to do this, he should be IMPEACHED immediately on Jan 21, 2013. This is the BEST WAY to Honor All of Our Troops. Bring Our Troops Home Now! President Obama, please restore today the Honor and Dignity Our Soldiers & Veterans deserve.

I mean no offense to anyone, and one can obviously post anything they want. I was intending this to be a thread simply acknowledging the day, and what it means.
I have a personal request. We have 355+ days when we can discuss the politics of war. Maybe today we can think of the individual soldier manning a checkpoint in Afghanistan or the medic going into a hot LZ to save lives or the solider guarding a building project in Iraq or the family that has lost their father, mother, son or daughter who will never be coming home.

micah, I have to agree with "splue".

And though there has been offense taken at some of the replies, I don't feel the real spirit of your initial post has been forgotten. I think it is possible to protest a war and still honor our brothers and sisters who are the warriors. If not for those brave souls, we would not be able to voice dissent without suffering dire consequences. Regardless of one's views of war, if you dishonor the warriors, you dishonor yourself.

Thank you.

Can we just put all the judgemental bullshit on the shelf for one fucking day?

On behalf of my son, lets just focus on the individuals for just one day, please. We can certainly resume the debate on the issue another day.

SDH, as I have said before, "Thanks go out to your son, for his service; and to his family as well, for the obvious hardship endured by all the relatives of one deployed to a war zone. Positive thoughts, peaceful vibes and prayers the he, and all his comrades in arms, will soon come home safely.
